Chester G. Elder Memorial Scholarship
|

This scholarship has been established by Mr. Elder’s family, former colleges and students to honor his life and work. The scholarship will provide financial assistance to a graduating senior at South Carroll High School in Sykesville, MD, or an alumnus, who has been accepted or is currently enrolled at a college or university, planning to pursue a course of study that will lead to a career in education. The successful candidate will have shown academic achievement and meet the criteria established for this scholarship.
Born in West Virginia in 1924, Chester was the third of six children. He served as in army medic in Europe during World War II, after which he attended West Virginia University and Clenville State College, where he received his degree in English. Mr. Elder and his family moved to Mount Airy in 1955 where he taught at Mt. Airy High School. He was made Vice Principal and then Principal in 1958 and 1959 respectively, earning his M.Ed. from George Washington University during this time. Mr. Elder then served as principal of the new South Carroll High School from 1966 until his retirement in 1990.
In speaking of Mr. Elder, his grined the Reverend Dennis Yocum recalled that he integrated the virtues of integrity, humility, fidelity, courage, justice, patience and industry into his daily life, setting an example for his children, students colleagues and friends alike. When asked “What was the most fun you had in teaching?” Mr. Elder replied, “That’s easy – 7th grade English class. We had the most fun.”
